Hana Ho`ohiwahiwa `O Ka`iulani - To Celebrate and Honor Kaiulani
Each year in October, the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani hosts a week of special events honoring the legacy and birthday of its namesake, Princess Victoria Kaiulani Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kawekiu i Lunalilo Cleghorn. Appropriately named Hana Hoohiwahiwa O Ka'iulani (to celebrate and honor Kaiulani), the commemoration week is scheduled for mid October. Each day of Hana Hoohiwahiwa O Kaiulani a different complimentary cultural activity including hula lessons, fresh flower lei making, ukulele lessons, wood crafting, and a Cooking Demonstration with Chef Ralf Bauer and Chef John Hightower will be offered from the hotel’s Dolphin Lanai. The Kaiulani 5th grade students will celebrate her legacy in song and storytelling at the Lava Rock Stage. The climax of the weeklong celebration is the Princess Kaiulani Keiki Hula Festival in the Ainahau Showroom along with a Royal Procession.
The popular festival showcases performances by over 100 keiki (children) ages 5 – 12 years old from various halau (hula schools) on the island of Oahu. This non-competitive hula festival is open to everyone and admission is free.
An arts and crafts fair in the Ainahau Lobby offers an opportunity to purchase locally handcrafted items, including Hawaiian jewelry, instruments, hula ornaments, feather leis and seed bracelets or browse among numerous tables displaying crafts by island artisans.
